Every private server promises backups. Fewer have ever tried restoring one.
Both the website database and the game database are now backed up nightly, encrypted, and kept for two weeks. Where they are kept is the honest weak point: the website backup sits on the website machine, and the game copy held here has not been refreshed since it was taken. Getting both onto storage that is not the machine being protected is the next step, and this page will say so when it is done.
Each backup verifies itself before it is allowed to replace an older one - if an archive cannot be decrypted and read back, the rotation stops rather than quietly overwriting a good copy with a broken one.
Both restores have been rehearsed end to end: the archive is decrypted, rebuilt into an isolated copy of the database, and compared against the live one table by table and row by row. The game restore was verified down to exact account, character and inventory counts.
The game database needed particular care. Its tables use an older storage format, so a clean backup requires briefly locking the data. Most of its size is activity logs rather than player data, so those are excluded - which keeps the lock to about one second instead of stalling the game for minutes. What players would actually miss is captured in full.
